Global Affairs Theoretical and Empirical Journal (GATE)

In the 2014, a group of students (including several Center student researchers) created this on-line international affairs journal. Students solicit and edit submissions, write articles and are responsible for all layout and production. Center co-director Daniel Rothenberg is the faculty advisor for the journal and articles are sometimes based on Center events and activities.

Each spring, Center co-directors Peter Bergen and Daniel Rothenberg teach a course on “The Future of War” which provides an overview of issues associated with the changing nature of war and conflict.

Each year, the Center accepts a select number of student researchers who work with affiliated faculty and Future of War Fellows on a variety of projects. Students have supported book research on emerging military technologies, the social impact of the post-9/11 wars, security in the Middle East and other themes. They attend the annual Future of War conference in Washington, DC and assist with Center events and activities. In addition, Student Research Fellows have gone on to intern at New America, the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia and elsewhere.

The Center on the Future of War organizes conferences, annual speakers’ series, lectures, and seminars at ASU, in the Phoenix community, and in Washington, D.C. These efforts highlight the work of Center faculty affiliates, link the university with New America, and support ASU innovation and scholarship. They also connect ASU faculty and students as well as the larger community with nationally known experts, emerging research and thoughtful commentary.

The Center is committed to educational programmingthat integrates ASU students with Future of War activities including research, career planning course work and support for individual and group projects. The Center offers research positions to a select group of students each year, develops innovative classroom and on-line courses, and links students with key project team experts. These efforts connect students with multiple ASU and community partners and with a variety of opportunities in Washington, DC, elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad.
